We spend time on these campuses. We pay special attention to methods used to remediate students and how schools provide grade-appropriate content to students who learn differently. We know social skills training programs and which schools implement them effectively.

Young Adult Options

Many of our 18+ year old students struggle with “failure to launch.” They appear unmotivated, dysregulated, avoidant, and addicted to their screens. They’ve tried college but it didn’t work out. Or they still have some high school to complete. Others struggle with drug addiction, OCD, depression or anxiety that have overtaken their ability to function.

A continuum of options are available for young adults 18-30+.Elm Street Placements consultants visit programs throughout the country and help families and young adults navigate their options and choose the right fit program.

We understand the difficulties that come with raising a child with challenges and know just how life-changing the right program can be. Our goal is to help families find the appropriate educational and therapeutic programs for their children, teens, and young adults.

Therapeutic Wilderness Programs

Often our process when working with a young person needing therapeutic intervention starts with a short term, outdoor, therapeutic program. We visit each program and spend time out in the field with students, field staff and therapists. We evaluate the programs for safety, for their ability to stabilize, assess, and treat child, teen and young adult mental health issues.

Participants engage in wilderness activities including hiking, camping, backpacking, and fire building, alongside a therapeutic curriculum. The curriculum is designed to keep the adolescent safe, understand the young person’s challenges, bring them through a therapeutic process, and assess their needs for aftercare.

Hospital Based Programs

These programs stabilize, assess and treat a variety of mental health disorders in a hospital setting. Often a few weeks to a few months in duration.

Therapeutic Boarding Schools

Therapeutic Boarding Schools (or TBS) engage students in a full, college-prep (when appropriate) curriculum as well as individual, group, and family therapy. These schools typically have a year-round calendar, with academic and therapeutic support continuing through the summer months. Some of the schools support a wide range of issues, while others specialize in a particular profile of students. Elm Street Placements knows these schools intimately and will match your child with just the right fit.

Students typically attend TBS for 1-2 years.

Residential Treatment Centers

Residential Treatment Centers (or RTC) offer an intense immersion in mental health treatment with a full complement of individual, group and family therapy as well as some academic coursework. Typically, in residential treatment, students are within therapeutic staff’s line of sight 24/7 and  a psychiatrist works closely with the therapeutic team.

Students usually remain in RTC level of care for 9-12 months.

Supportive Boarding and Day

For students whose needs aren’t being met at their current school, we know the alternatives.
